Boris Johnson insisted the UK Government would be expanding on their advice during the coronavirus pandemic regarding protection and lockdown measures. During the Thursday briefing, Mr Johnson claimed that face masks may be useful during the crisis and after lockdown measures have been relaxed. Francis Elliott of The Times asked: “You have said you will give some guidance next week to safer workplaces and transport.

“Can we expect some clarity on face masks?”

Mr Johnson answered: “On your excellent point which was about masks and face coverings. 

“What I think SAGE is saying is and what I certainly agree with is that as part of coming out of the lockdown I do think that face coverings will be useful both for epidemiological reasons but also for giving people confidence that they can go back to work. 

“But you will hear more next week.”

The Prime Minister explained the Government would be announcing more information and advice for the public next week.

Mr Johnson explained that the new advice will help outline how the country can jumpstart its economy and move nearer towards normality.

He added that the measures would ensure that the UK can continue to see a fall in COVID-19 cases while ensuring the economy resumes.

During the briefing, Mr Johnson also claimed the UK had passed the peak of the virus. 

Mr Johnson admitted that while the UK is leading efforts, there is still no sure date as to when the vaccine will be available. 

He added the UK must continue to be resilient in the face of this virus and negate the progress already made.

The Prime Minister pleaded with Britons to continue to follow the rules and guidelines to ensure the UK does not fall victim to a second coronavirus wave.
