Lynn called BBC Radio 5 Live as the Community Secretary was answering questions from the public when she burst into tears complaining she is not able to see her children and grandchildren despite lockdown rules being eased for many in the UK. She said: “As a heartbroken grandmother, who has had everything to do with bringing up and helping with her grandchildren, why when everything is being eased, children sent to school, people mixing in at a long distance, why I cannot and will not be able to cuddle or hug my children and grandchildren for six to maybe 12 months or even more in a vaccine is not found?

“I’m not allowed to do that and it’s breaking my heart not to see my children and grandchildren.

“And many many other mothers and grandmothers are feeling exactly the same.”

Mr Jenrick replied: “Well, Lynn, I’ve had similar conversations with my mum who would like to come and bear her arms around my children.

“But the medical advice is that’s not right.

“It’s not the right thing to do at this moment in time.

“Because we need to try to prevent the spread of the virus and control the virus at the moment.

“So I think we’re just going to have to ask you – I know it’s really tough and every family is going through this – but just to hold off a little bit longer.”

The Cabinet minister also acknowledged the coronavirus crisis in care homes was “absolutely terrible”.

He added: “I don’t deny that what is happening in care homes is absolutely terrible. It’s a huge challenge.

Boris Johnson announced on Sunday people will be able to see one member of different households in public at a two-metre distance from this week. 

Children are expected to return to school as soon as June and adults can now exercise as much as they like every day outdoor. 

People are still banned from visiting other family members or friends who live in different households. 

The new rules will be in place until the end of May when the Government will reassess the scientific data.
