Princess Diana news: How Charles ex wife gained sympathy after divorce with speech trick

Last night on Channel 5’s Princess Diana: In Her Own Words a number of experts explored Diana’s journey through her turbulent marriage and her later success, finding meaning in working for others. Diana was married to Prince Charles aged just 20.

Sadly, Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996 after the couple announced their separation in 1992.

Having worked as a teacher briefly before she married, Diana’s separation from her husband left her looking to find her purpose in life.

She carried on in her royal duties after the separation, still representing many charities and taking overseas trips to raise awareness for causes including the aids crisis and the ravages caused by landmines in Bolivia.

While once described as “shy Di” by the press, Diana found her voice in making speeches over time.

It was that year the shocking book Diana: Her True Story, published by Andrew Morton after a series of interviews with the royal, has been published.

It revealed many problems within the royal family, but most famously Charles’ relationship with his now wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Charles Crawford, a speech writer, analysed Diana’s speech.

He told viewers: “One of the things you do when writing a speech, one of the things to think about – and this technique goes back to the ancient Greeks – is you might post a question, but you might pose three questions and you might pose three questions that have the same word in. Repetition, questions, help give a speech structure.”

“I remember her telling me on the first occasion she went the Queen Mother looked at her and raised an eyebrow and said, ‘I didn’t think we’d see you again’.

“Under that kind of pressure you have to be quite a tough character and I think she found it extremely hard, but she took a deep breath and she got through it.”

The same documentary revealed how the Queen destroyed Diana’s hope to salvage marriage with Charles.

According to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, Diana had believed the marriage could continue with her and Charles becoming “partners” rather than a couple.
