Hurricane Hanna strengthened to a category one storm this morning, making it the first hurricane of the season in the Atlantic. The barrelling twister is packing sustained winds of 80mph according to the latest National Hurricane Centre report, and it is heading straight for land. Hanna is currently just 75 miles from Port Mansfield and the hurricane is getting stronger as it crawls closer to the coast,
The latest NHC and NOAA advisory, used at 10am CET (4pm BST)says: “A Storm Surge Warning means there is a danger of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, during the next 24 hours in the indicated locations.

Surge Watch/Warning Graphic, available at hurricanes.gov.
“This is a life-threatening situation. Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other dangerous conditions.
“Promptly follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials.”
The NHC warning said: “Life-threatening storm surge is occurring along portions of the Texas coast from Port Mansfield to Sargent, where a Storm Surge Warning is in effect.
“Residents in these locations should follow advice given by local emergency officials.
“Hurricane conditions are expected along the Texas coast from Port Mansfield to Mesquite Bay, where a Hurricane Warning is in effect.
“Tropical storm conditions are expected to first reach the coast within the warning area this morning.
“Hanna is expected to produce heavy rains across portions of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico.
“These rains could result in life-threatening flash flooding and isolated minor to moderate river flooding.”
