It says the applicant’s essential skills should include “excellent risk management and crisis communication skills”. The salary is “based on experience” but sources suggest it is likely to be more than £100,000-a-year. The successful applicant is likely to be an experienced broadcaster. Applications close on August 31.

Mr Johnson announced plans to introduce daily televised press briefings and question-and-answer sessions earlier this month but the move has come under fire from critics of the Prime Minister.

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage tweeted: “Why can the PM not do the job himself?

“The country wants leadership, not a paid lackey.”

The new format, similar to that used by US presidents, is expected to come in by October.

Under existing arrangements, political journalists are able to question the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson – off camera every day.

These briefings are on the record, meaning they can be quoted and attributed to the spokesperson.

Under the changes, the briefings will be on camera and be broadcast from 9 Downing Street.

The Government held daily briefings from No 10 for several months during the coronavirus pandemic.

They started on 16 March in response to criticism over a lack of transparency over plans to stem the spread of the pandemic.

Donald Trump halted the briefings for more than a year.

New US Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany held the first briefing for 459 days last May.

The US daily press briefings were first televised in 1995 under President Bill Clinton.
