It came after Hope Hicks, one of his closest advisors, tested positive for the disease on Thursday.

Ms Hicks was with the president less than 24 hours before testing positive.

The President made the revelation on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show.

He said: “I just went out with a test and the first lady went out with a test.

“So whether we have to quarantine. I just went in for a test and who knows.

“It’s very hard when you’re with people from the military and law enforcement and they want to hug you, they want to kiss you.”  

Ms Hicks was with Mr Trump on Wednesday aboard the president’s Marine One helicopter according to White House reporters.

She went on to accompany the president to a rally in Minnesota.

Ms Hicks began experiencing symptoms of the disease on the way back from the rally and was quarantined on Air Force One according to Bloomberg News.

A day earlier on she was with the president when he travelled to the Cleveland presidential debate on Air Force One.

In a statement White House spokesman Judd Deere said: “The president takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously.”

“White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling.”

During the 2016 presidential campaign Ms Hicks worked as a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign.

Following Mr Trump’s election she became White House communications director.

In March 2018 she left to take-up a job at Fox before returning to the White House this February.

A number of White House aides have previously tested positive for coronavirus.

Katie Miller, press secretary to vice-president Mike Pence, was diagnosed in May but made a full recovery.

One of Mr Trump’s personal valets, a naval serviceman, tested positive in the same month.

Robert O’Brien, a national security advisor, and several secret service agents have also caught the disease.

America has had more confirmed coronavirus deaths and cases than any other country in the world.

More than 200,000 Americans have been killed by the disease since it emerged.

Earlier this week Dr Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus response team, warned America is “not in a good place” when it comes to the virus.

Speaking to ABC News he said: “As we get into the fall and the winter, you really want the level of community spread to be as low as you possibility get it.

“There are states that are starting to show uptick in cases and even some increases in hospitalizations in some states.”
