However the president is continuing to claim he was the victim of mass electoral fraud. Mr Trump made the remarks at a press briefing after a traditional Thanksgiving phone call to the Armed Forces. Democrat Joe Biden beat the incumbent President in the election by 306 electoral college votes to 232.

Mr Trump was asked at a press conference whether he will voluntarily depart from the White House if the Electoral College votes against him .

The President, marking a change of tone from previous remarks, replied: “Certainly I will, and you know that.” 

But he continued to claim, without evidence, that the election was “a massive fraud”. 

The outgoing President then added: “We are like a third world country.”
