Steven Spielberg: Why did Steven Spielberg quit Indiana Jones 5? | Films | Entertainment

Steven Spielberg, as well as working on some of the biggest movies ever, has also worked alongside actors who have become major film stars. One of these is Harrison Ford, with whom Steven has worked on the Indiana Jones franchise. Steven has directed four of these, with a fifth on the way being helmed by James Mangold.

Why did Steven Spielberg quit Indiana Jones?

Steven was involved in the fifth Indiana Jones film, however, walked away from it in a surprising turn of events.

In February 2020, when the movie was announced, Steven said he was passing the franchise on to ‘a new generation.’

Fans may have thought this was happening after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in which it looked probable Shia LaBoeuf’s character would take over as the main character.

However, with Harrison Ford still well and truly Indie, the ‘new generation’ came into question, leading fans to query if another reason was behind Steven’s departure, though he has remained as a ‘hands-on’ producer.

In October last year, screenwriter David Koepp admitted there were some creative differences between Steven and the team, which perhaps is the real reason behind his exit from the director’s chair.

David told Den of Geek: “I tried a couple different versions with Steven and they all had some good stuff about them and they all had some stuff that didn’t work, which happens.

“But, it was just very hard to have everybody come together all at once and have all the elements – Steven, Harrison [Ford], the script and Disney. And it didn’t.

“When James Mangold came in and Steven stepped out, that was a pretty logical breaking point.

“It’s a gracious time to step out the door because I think the last thing a new director wants is the old director’s writer.”

David was working on the film’s script along with Jonathan Kasdan, but when Steven left, so did they, and James brought in his own scriptwriters.

In a tweet from April 2021, James confirmed the new writers, saying: “The official press release mentioned writers but I guess it gets left out on recaps…

Given Phoebe’s writing abilities, it may be she will be brought in to help work on the film’s script as well, though this has not been confirmed.

James said in a statement earlier this year: “I’m thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great film-makers.

“Steven, Harrison, Kathy, Frank, and John are all artistic heroes of mine.

“When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can’t help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself.”

Kathy refers to Kathleen Kennedy, the head of Lucasfilm, and Frank Marshall is a producer, both of whom founded the production company Amblin Entertainment along with Steven.
