Footage shows a Udaloy-Class Destroyer launch a Kalibr-NK missile from its deck from an undisclosed location which quickly went wrong when the missile malfunctioned in the air. A rocket booster is thought to have detached itself as the missile perilously hangs in the air for several seconds and at one point looks like it will hit the ship. The missile then spirals into the sea before exploding underwater in an embarrassing and potentially fatal military exercise for Russia.
The minute-and-a-half clip showed the rocket launch itself into the ocean and explode underwater leaving a large shockwave.
Russian media reported that no one was hurt during the failed launch and the ship has now gone back for repairs.
Before the launch, the frigate underwent an upgrade at Vladivostok in the Russian far east to be equipped with land, sea and underwater fighting capabilities.
The ship received several missile systems and advanced artillery as part of the upgrades.
While there have been no confirmed reports of the location of the ship it is believed it may be in the Black Sea where the Russian navy has been instructed to carry out live-fire exercises.
On land, over 100,000 Russian troops carried out live drills near the Ukrainian border as global superpowers feared military conflict could break out.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has since ordered troops to pull back from the border after weeks of political tensions and pressure.
President Joe Biden contacted the Russian leader several times to voice America’s concerns over military build-up on the border and has promised to chair summits between the parties involved.
“But their actions will have consequences if they turn out to be true, and they turned out to be true.”
“I responded in a direct and proportionate way to Russia’s interference in our elections and cyberattacks on our government and businesses and they did both of these things and I told them I would respond and we have.”
Mr Biden put more sanctions on Russia following cyberattacks and election interference.
