Amazon Fresh: Retailer opens fourth checkout-free supermarket in Canary Wharf

Amazon Fresh has opened its fourth till-less grocery store in the UK. Selling everything from fresh fruit and veg to ready meals, the new addition is the fourth supermarket to the Amazon Fresh chain. How does it work?
Amazon is the world’s largest retailer but was yet to dominate the grocery industry until earlier this year.
The first store opened in Ealing Broadway before expanding to Wembley Park and White City.
At the time, director of Amazon Fresh stores UK, Matt Birch said: “The focus was just creating a really easy shopping experience for customers.
“We recognise that UK customers want to shop in a convenient way so we really think they will appreciate being able to walk in and walk out with the shopping they need.”

Amazon has said it hopes to open more stores in the future.
The first Amazon Fresh store, which opened in Ealing Broadway, saw lengthy queues and shoppers delighted about how easy it was to shop.
At the time, Mr Birch added: “Since opening our first Amazon Fresh store in Ealing, we’ve heard from our customers how much they enjoy the tasty food from our new ‘by Amazon’ range and the effortless shopping experience.
“The [Wembley Park] store features our Just Walk Out technology, which enables customers to take what they want and just walk out, making shopping for essential grocery items even more convenient.”
Food sold in stores includes milk, eggs, butter as well as sandwiches and ready meals.
There is also a premium food range where customers can pick up delicious pudding options.
The Canary Wharf location is situated on Wood Wharf, an office, retail and residential complex on the east side of Canary Wharf.
The store has a 2,500 sq ft shop floor and when fully occupied, the area of London could see around 120,000 working in Canary Wharf.
If continued, the company could have around 16 supermarkets by the end of the year.
In other supermarket news, Tesco revealed yesterday that it would be scrapping its Metro stores, turning them into other formats.
It comes after the supermarket said customer shopping habits had changed.
Eighty-nine Metro stores will become Express stores, while the remaining 58 will be changed into superstores.
