Mr Johnson tied the knot with Carrie in front of a group of friends and family earlier today, despite sending out invitations to guests telling them to save the date on Saturday, July 30, 2022. He is the first Prime Minister to marry in office since Lord Liverpool married Mary Chester in 1822. 

One witness told the Sun that the cathedral, which is catholic, went into lockdown for the short service.

They said: “It was closed for about half an hour and they all came out after.

“It’s not very often we have weddings here, and when they came out they were all bungled into a car.

“It looked like nobody wanted to see who it was.”

Another member of staff said: “Yes, there was a wedding. It was the Prime Minister. 

“Carrie looked beautiful. She had a long white dress with no veil. She looked made up. 

“He was extremely happy as you can imagine, he looked very smart, and was in a very dapper suit.

“She came down the aisle and he didn’t take his eyes off her.

“They read each other’s vows and then they shared a kiss. 

“They looked besotted.”

Tourists visiting the cathedral were reported to be unaware the wedding was due to take place today. 

Just after 1.30pm, the church was cleared out with no apparent reason for doing so.

Staff also told visitors that the building was suddenly going into lockdown.

Puzzled onlookers were said to then see a limo arrive, which had Carrie inside, half an hour later.

She was seen wearing a long and flowing white dress, but did not wear a veil.

The ceremony was carried out by Father Daniel Humphreys who had given the couple pre-marriage instructions, and baptised their son Wilfred last year, The Sun reported.

Downing Street refused to comment following reports the pair had tied the knot at Westminster Cathedral.

The Sun reported that even senior Downing Street aides were totally unaware the couple were about to tie the knot.

One No 10 aide said: “I have been strictly told not to comment.”

The couple announced their engagement – together with the news that they were expecting their first child – in February last year.

It is Mr Johnson’s third marriage, having finalised his divorce from his second wife Marina Wheeler in 2020.

He and Ms Symonds have a son, Wilfred, who was born in April 2020.
