COVID-19: Space Jam, Top Gun and Bond – the films that are going to be released in cinemas soon | Ents & Arts News

It’s been a long time for many of us since we last stepped foot inside a cinema.

The COVID-19-enforced shutdowns has meant that dozens of movies have seen their debuts on the big screen delayed, pushing back cinema releases by up to two years.

Major studios are now tentatively releasing films into cinemas, in the hope that movie-goers will start heading back to screens around the world.

Below is a list of upcoming cinema releases in the UK that span the rest of 2021.

A Quiet Place II

When: Out now

Cast: John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy

Plot: A sequel to the 2018 film, it follows a family who live a world inhabited by monsters who have hypersensitive hearing – so must live their lives as quietly as possible.

Cruella

When: Out now

Cast: Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Joel Fry

Plot: An origin story that follows Cruella de Vil from Disney‘s 101 Dalmatians in 1970s punk London, as we learn what triggered her to start skinning dogs for their fur.

In The Heights

When: 11 June

Cast: Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Stephanie Beatriz

Plot: Before Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the musical In The Heights – about an immigrant community in a New York who are pining for a better life.

When: 24 June

Cast: Vin Diesel, John Cena, Helen Mirren

Plot: The ninth film in the Fast & Furious franchise in which Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) must face his younger brother, Jakob (John Cena), an assassin, who is working with old enemy Cipher.

Black Widow

When: 9 July

Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour

Plot: We’ve already seen her in the Avengers films, but now the Black Widow gets her movie, which follows the events of Captain America: Civil War and sees Natasha Romanov forced to confront a conspiracy about her past.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

When: 16 July

Cast: LeBron James, Don Cheadle, Bugs Bunny

Plot: Some 25 years after the original, we get the sequel, which sees basketball royalty LeBron James zapped into cyberspace and forced to play the most important game of this life – with the Looney Tunes.

Jungle Cruise

When: 30 July

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall

Plot: Based on the classic Disneyland Ride and set in the early 1900s, a scientist takes her brother on a journey into the jungle to find the Tree of Life – but must outwit a rival German expedition.

Respect

When: 13 August

Cast: Jennifer Hudson, Marlon Wayans, Forest Whittaker

Plot: Aretha Franklin is the latest star to get a biopic, with Respect following the life of the singer and civil rights activist.

People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan

When: 18 August

Cast: Asim Chaudhry, Allan Mustafa, Hugo Chegwin

Plot: From Hounslow to Tokyo – the Kurupt FM crew travel to Japan after learning one of its tracks has been used on a game show.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The 10 Rings

When: 3 September

Cast: Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung

Plot: Another entrant into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi, who was trained to be an assassin during young age, is drawn into the secret Ten Rings organisation and forced to confront his past.

Dear Evan Hansen

Plot: A Broadway and West End smash, the film looks at the unravelling of a lie told by the lead character who is battling anxiety and trying to fit in.

Plot: In Daniel Craig’s last trip out as 007, he is sent out to find a missing scientist – but is confronted with a villain who has a plan to kill millions.

Last Night In Soho

When: 29 October

Cast: Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith

Plot: In this new psychological horror from Edgar Wright, a young woman is transported back to the 1960s in the body of her celeb idol, but the dark, shady world around her begins to fall apart.

Eternals

When: 5 November

Cast: Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden

Plot: Yet another inception into the MCU – the Eternals are a race of immortals who have overseen Earth for thousands of years, and now must protect the planet from the Deviants – their evil counterparts.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Plot: A mother and her two children are forced to move to a farm they inherit from their late grandfather – where they discover their link to the original Ghostbusters.

Top Gun: Maverick

West Side Story

Matrix 4

When: 22 December

Cast: Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith

Plot: Well – we’re not sure, but the return of original cast members is exciting fans around the world.
