On this day, June 7, in 1990 Michael Jackson was gearing up to release his eighth studio album, Dangerous. The record would go on to be released on November 26, 1991, before becoming one of his most iconic albums of all time and was later certified 8x platinum after selling more than 32 million copies worldwide. During a “vigorous dance practice,” however, Michael suffered relentless chest pains.

Michael worked with his team to check himself into the Santa Monica hospital to get his symptoms looked at.

As soon as the news broke a press conference was held outside the hospital by Bob Jones, the Vice President of Communications for Michael’s company, MJJ Productions.

Speculation surfaced that the star had suffered a cardiac arrest, but Bob said the chest pain “wasn’t believed to have been a heart attack”.

Detailing the condition, Bob added it was something “that happens to football players a lot”.

Bob continued by adding Michael had undergone “extensive laboratory and X-ray testing, including the heart and lungs, which revealed no abnormalities”.

The 31-year-old’s doctor, Mark Zatzkis, also told press at the time: “[The pain] was caused by bruised ribs suffered during a vigorous dance practice.”

Bob went on to add on Michael’s condition: “Stress is a very important factor. I don’t say he’s worrying too much, [but] I would certainly like to see him rest more.”

After being put into the hospital the VP confirmed: “In the meantime, Mr Jackson remains under observation. His condition is stable and he is resting comfortably.”

On top of that, his lifelong friend, Elizabeth Taylor, suffered a near-fatal bout of pneumonia in April of the same year.

Michael and Elizabeth had been close friends for years after meeting in 1984.

The pair bonded over becoming stars as children and having lifelong careers.

Elizabeth was recovering from her pneumonia in the same hospital as Michael and even had a suite on the same floor.

After spending the night at the Santa Monica hospital, Michael was discharged the following day.

On June 8 1990, a newspaper report confirmed he went home after a round of tests.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said: “At 9pm he went home and is resting comfortably in stable condition.”
