Royal style: Camilla experiments with ‘stylish’ print-clashing outfits

Camilla Parker-Bowles is often admired for her style, from her woollen coats to tartan skirts and colour-block dresses. Most of her clothes are in neutral colours and, apart from tartan, the Duchess has not been one to don many patterns. However, over the past year, Camilla has been seen in many print-clashing outfits.

Samantha continued: “It’s fitting that the Duchess chose this print for a visit to the Garden Museum – the print is a mix of leaves, trees and animals.

“There are two great things this outfit nails – the fit and the print.

“The cinched-in waist draws attention to her womanly shape and it’s a flattering length, hitting on the calf, which is a favourite we see the Duchess wear regularly.”

Samantha explained that a jungle print is a step up from a classic floral print – it updates your outfit and is “fresher”.

The personal stylist said: “This jungle-inspired print is fresh and modern.”

Samantha emphasised that print-clashing worked well in this instance because the shade of red on Camilla’s mask matched the shade of red on her dress.

“The key to print clashing is to choose one colour which runs through both items,” Samantha said.

She added: “We’ve seen the Duchess showcase a love of print, print clashing and modern aesthetics over the last couple of years in particular.

“Many headlines were written about her leopard print face mask, which she wore last October with a chic monochrome pinafore dress.

“It was French fashion-editor worthy.”

Royal fans have seen Camilla wearing her leopard print mask, as well as various floral masks, in the past year.

Samantha went on to say that nobody should shy away from wearing a printed mask with a printed outfit.

She said: “Most people might think a black mask would look best with a monochrome outfit.

However, leopard print not only adds interest, it’s also much more flattering.

“Black can be draining, so as you get older, choosing softer neutrals like brown is much more flattering, particularly near your face.

“You want to think ‘glow’ – hold colours up to your face and pay attention to which ones make you appear healthy and bright.”

However, when wearing a print-clashing outfit, Samantha recommended keeping your accessories plain and simple.

She explained: “Accessories are also really important when wearing florals. The wrong shoes or handbag can drain all the joy from the print.

“So choose neutrals, like the Duchess. A nude shoe will elongate your legs.”
