A low pressure system will push wet and windy weather around northern parts of the country over the next few days. But there will also be a chill in the air as temperatures will also become frosty. Forecaster Sophie Yeomans at the Met Office warned temperatures could drop to -2 over the weekend in some parts.

She told Express.co.uk: “There are weather systems in the air will bring rain and wind across many parts of the UK.

“A few inches of snow may fall on the hills and mountains of Scotland from Saturday night and Sunday morning.

“Snow may also reach as far south as the tips of the Lake District and possible the Pennines. “

Ms Yeomans added temperatures will only reach highs of 9 or 10C further south during the daytime of Saturday and Sunday.

A statement on the Met Office’s website added frost and fog could also blanket many regions over the next few days.

It said: “This evening there will be some light rain and drizzle affecting parts of the northwest.

“Elsewhere, most places dry but largely cloudy with mist and fog in places, especially on hills, while feeling chilly in the south.

“Later in the week will be mostly dry but with cloudy skies in most places.

Much of the UK will cloudy and murky with mist and fog patches which could be dense in places, according to Meteogroup.

It said: “Once any early patches of mist and fog clear on Thursday, it will be a dull and overcast morning with plenty of cloud.

“Patchy light rain or drizzle is likely in Wales and north-west England with persistent rain in north-west Scotland, some heavy in the afternoon.

“On Friday, most areas will be dry and cloudy but grey. However there will be rain in northern Scotland, most of which will be light.

“Saturday will be mostly cloudy too but there will be rain in western Scotland, Northern Ireland and some Irish Sea coasts.”

There are also 46 flood warnings in place by the Environment Agency (EA).

Some of the rivers affected include Welney Causeway in Norfolk. River Thames and tributaries in the Oxford area, the Upper Og Valley and River Windrush from Bourton to Newbridge.

People are being warned by the EA to prepare for possible flooding.
