Beijing state media reports authorities have shut off the Badaling section of the popular tourist destination to try and prevent the spread of the virus, which has claimed the lives of 26 people and infected more than 800 others. Badaling is located 43 miles north west of Beijing and is one of the major access routes to the historical landmark. The entry point gives access to more than seven miles of the wall which attracts hundreds of thousands of explorers each year.

Chinese authorities have attempted to contain the virus by putting 10 cities and 33 million people on lockdown.

Train stations, the airport and subways are closed across Wuhan and nine of its neighbouring cities in China’s Hubei province.

A second major tourist attraction in China also announced it would be closing due to the outbreak of the disease.

Disneyland in Shanghai said it would be closing its doors from Saturday until further notice.

In a statement the resort said the urgent action was required to “ensure the health and safety of our guests and cast”.

The lockdown across China has been prompted amid growing fears the virus could spread further during the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Millions of Chinese nationals will travel domestically and abroad during the holiday which officially runs for the next fifteen days.

This is a developing news story, more to follow.
