The Oscar-winning filmmaker is famous for writing and directing his own original content. And as his latest movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Oscar-nominated, Quentin Tarantino has spoken of a “war for movies” going on in the film industry against franchises like James Bond, Star Wars and Marvel’s Avengers Endgame. Speaking with Deadline, he said: “When you say, despite the sequels and the Avengers Endgame and all of that, I actually think a war for movies got played out this last year.”
The 56-year-old continued: “As far as I can see, the commercial product that is owned by the conglomerates, the projects everybody knows about and has in their DNA, whether it be the Marvel Comics, the Star Wars, Godzilla and James Bond, those films never had a better year than last year.
“It would have been the year that their world domination would have been complete. But it kind of wasn’t.”
“Because of what you said, a lot of original movie comment came out and demanded to be seen, and demanded to be seen at the theatres.
“That ended up becoming a really, really strong year. I’m really proud to be nominated with the other films that just got nominated.”

Last year, at the BFI Film Festival he said: “How do you value a film?
“The value of a film which is like a theme park film, the Marvel type picture, where theatres become amusement parks?
“That’s a different experience and it’s not, as I was saying earlier, it’s not cinema, it’s something else.
“Whether you go for that or not it is something else and we shouldn’t be invaded by it – that’s a big issue.”
Scorsese added: “And we need the theatre owners to step up to allow theatres to show films that are narrative films.
“Narrative films could be one long take for three hours too, you know.
“It doesn’t have to be conventional beginning middle and end.”
The director has received backlash from some at Marvel Studios like James Gunn, while others like Robert Downey Jr appreciate his opinion.
