Liam told The Diary of a CEO Podcast: “I know a lot of people are going to be mad at me for saying that, but I needed to stop or it would kill me.”
The band got together on the set of The X Factor in 2009.
The five solo singers – Liam, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson – were placed together by Simon Cowell and ultimately came third in the competition.
After the talent show One Direction enjoyed a strong six years in the music industry, selling more than 70 million records worldwide and achieving four UK number ones throughout numerous world tours.
During this time, however, Liam was suffering a lot of pressure on top of dealing with constant isolation.

Liam said: “In the band … the best way to secure us, because of how big we’d got, was just to lock us in our rooms.
“What’s in the room? A mini-bar.
“So, at a certain point I thought, I’m just going to have a party-for-one and that seemed to carry on for many years of my life.”
Liam continued: “So, it looked like they pulled the dust cloth off and let us out for a minute and then back underneath it.”
Despite this bleak outlook, the star added: “Don’t get me wrong, we had the best time ever, but … you don’t realise you have a choice at that point.”
Despite the singer saying he hit “rock bottom” during these times, he added he has come out the other side as a stronger person.
Since then, rumours of the band reuniting in 2021 have continued to crop up.
Ladbrokes recently gave 1D staggering 1/4 odds on getting back together before the end of the year.
The firm’s Alex Apati commented: “Directioners are hopeful the lads will be making an imminent comeback, and the odds suggest there’s every chance it happens before the year is out.”
However exciting this may be, it is as of yet uncertain if Zayn will be joining the rest of the band in their presumed reunion.
