Prince William joined England players in their Wembley changing room after the Three Lions suffered penalty heartbreak against the Italians. The future King offered his condolences by giving hugs to the Three Lions who missed in the penalty shootout.

Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw gave England an early lead but Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci pulled the sides level midway into the second half.

After a nail-biting match, which included a goalless period of extra time, the game was to be decided by penalties.

Although Everton’s Jordan Pickford pulled off two sublime saves in the shootout, the Azzurri took the trophy back to Rome.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed their attempts from the spot against Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Speaking to The Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Conor Coady revealed what happened when the Duke of Cambridge entered the changing room.

“The changing room was quiet after the final,” the 5-cap England international said.

“We were trying to console the three boys. The manager was brilliant at that. Then Prince William came in.”

Coady continued: “I’m a big fan of the royals, fascinated by them and when he walked through the door it was, ‘Wow unbelievable’.”

Just minutes after kick-off, William, Kate and George were caught celebrating Shaw’s early goal from their seats in the royal box.

Prince William leapt to his feet while Prince George beamed with delight.

Unfortunately, England could not come out on top in their first appearance in a major international final since 1966.

In what must have been an emotional rollercoaster, George and William were snapped after the final looking devastated by England’s agonising defeat.
