Pirates of the Caribbean Johnny Depp: ‘Nicest guy in Hollywood’ spent thousands on crew | Films | Entertainment

After the conclusion to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Disney continued with the adventures of Jack Sparrow with subsequent movies. Johnny Depp reprised his role as the swashbuckling hero, beginning with the 2011 movie On Stranger Tides. Instead of working alongside Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, he instead acted with Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Kevin R McNally. During the production of the film, its crew were subjected to some horrible weather conditions.
The cast and crew worked through Caribbean weather on set for the pirate movie, including tropical storms and gale-force winds.
In an interview at the time, Depp commented on the film’s production, saying: “Things became a little creaky.”
On top of this, the film crew were subjected to cruel British weather when they returned to the UK to work at Pinewood Studios.
To combat these rough times, Depp gifted the cast and crew some protection from the elements.

A source said at the time: “Johnny paid out of his own pocket for all 500 of us to have a nice warm waterproof coat.

According to another source, the 500 coats cost the Edward Scissorhands star upwards of $60,000 to keep everyone safe and dry.
The following year, on May 20 2011, On Stranger Tides was released in cinemas internationally.

During filming, Depp spoke candidly about contributing to the script for the first time in the series.
He said: “Well it’s like going into a think tank basically, you know. And just kind of throwing ideas around, if something sparks, it sparks.
“And if they accept it, they accept it, and thankfully they did, I mean hopefully for the better.
“But no, they were very receptive to just kind of throwing ideas around, just to make it different and to keep it very fresh. As opposed to just: ‘Well here comes another one,’ you know ‘another sequel’ or something. But just to try to, try to keep things different.” (Via Collider)
Depp also spoke about the character progression of Jack Sparrow over the films to come.
He confessed: “I mean I honestly think this whole thing about characters and character arcs and finding themselves and this and that… I honestly think old Captain Jack found himself a long time ago.
“I don’t think there’s any more room to—he can’t go any further, I think he’s hit a wall as it were.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available on Disney Plus now.
