The supermarket chain is hoping to be the first to offer nationwide same-day deliveries in a move that will see it beat much of its competition. M&S boss, Steve Rowe, explained that it would allow shoppers to get the clothes they need in a hurry – including everything from brand new school uniforms to underwear.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, orders would be picked and shipped from M&S stores to give the supermarket an advantage over rivals offering next day delivery.

There has been no timescale given for the launch, but it is likely to be trialled later in the year.

Mr Rowe said: “People think of the store portfolio as an albatross around our neck but I don’t think it is.

“We can be where our customers want and they can choose how quickly they want it.”

In selected areas, some fashion retailers already offer same day delivery.

ASOS allows customers in certain postcodes to have items delivered by 10pm if they place their order by midday – though this costs £7.95.

Fashion chain Zara charges the same for a similar service in London, with Matches Fashion also offering a 90-minute service in the city.

Retail analyst Richard Hyman said: “M&S has upped its competitive ante.
