At the end of Avengers Endgame Captain America (Chris Evans) travelled back through time to return the Infinity Stones to their rightful timelines. But when he was done, he didn’t return to his own timeline. Instead, the romantic went back to his original time in the 1940s to be with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). The last seconds of the touching story showed the pair finally dancing after being apart for decades. This moment may have been brought to an unceremonious end by the Time Variance Authority (TVA).

During the Disney Plus show, Loki, the TVA were shown “pruning” variants throughout the ever-expanding timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This process involved shocking variants with a unique taser that sent them to a dying dimension.

Director of the show, Kate Herron, was recently asked about the fate of Steve Rogers and Carter after the events of Endgame, considering they were both variants in that timeline.

She laughed: “So! I’ve been thinking about this, I’m just like [so excited] … People are going to be annoyed because it’s not a definitive answer, but also I can only really answer as a fan, right?”

Herron went on: “My theory is this: it comes down to if you’re an optimist or a pessimist. If you’re an optimist, maybe it was okay [for] them living that way, and the branch wasn’t so severe that it didn’t need to be pruned, and that meant that they could stay together.

“Maybe the romantics can say somehow that managed to exist. And then the pessimists [think]: ‘They probably got pruned.'” (Via The Direct)

The director added: “It depends on how people fall on that side of things because in my head I guess it would be … generally branches have to be pruned and then maintained, right? But it depends.”

The Loki mastermind then pessimistically added: “If it’s alternate, it would imply that it’s running alongside our main timeline, so yeah. I don’t want to definitively say that they were pruned, but by our logic in the TVA, probably.”

With that said, the future of the MCU is entirely uncertain.

The introduction of Kang (Jonathan Majors) means the upcoming stories could be even more bombastic than ever.

Herron later touched upon what could be coming for the MCU in the near future.

She said: “I can’t speak for what the future plans to be with them, but I guess anything’s possible, right?”

Herron went on: “Because you see in the void like all this craziness has been sent there and deleted and all of that stuff will be on its own timeline.

“So I guess just expect the unexpected, to quote our show.”
