‘Genuine’ comment from Boots employee changes grieving woman’s day

Sarah Mitchell was shopping for makeup and eyelashes at Ravenhead Retail Park, in St Helens, on August 8 when the staff member made the insightful comment. Her boyfriend suggested the trip as she has been feeling “really down” and because they have a wedding coming up.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, it was when Ms Mitchell was standing at the counter that the mum-of-one was stunned by a staff member.

She said: “I was feeling really down about myself and my boyfriend said let’s go out and buy some stuff.

“We’ve got a wedding on Saturday that we’re going to and I was treating myself to makeup and eyelashes and stuff like that to make myself feel good.

“I went to the counter and I was looking the other way because my boyfriend was sorting it and she just said ‘you look really pretty and I love your eyelashes as well’.

“It wasn’t as if I was interacting with her or chatting beforehand. She just looked at me and said it so it came across really genuine. It was really nice.”

Ms Mitchell said she did not recognise the member of staff, who she described as having baby pink hair.

She said she knows the gesture may mean nothing to some people, but would encourage others to do the same as “you have no idea what someone’s day has been like or what their life is like”.

The 37-year-old said she has “lost a lot of confidence over the years” and that she feels her feelings stem from bereavement.

She said the knock on affect of losing her family members so close together has led her to feel down and as a result conscious of her appearance, but that in the last six months she has started to feel better.

Ms Mitchell added: “I’ve lost most of my family in the space of five years. That experience I think is what started it. I lost my dad in 2016 and my mum ten months later and lost my brother in September.

“I didn’t walk out there thinking I’m fantastic or anything but when you get friends and close family or a partner saying that you think they have to say that because they love me.
