English Heritage erected the tribute to Ronnie at 126 Downham Road in Islington, north London, where he was born into poverty in 1923. He went on to become a singer, yodeller and “siffleur” another word for whistler.

Known as “Whistling Ronnie” he began his career in the school choir and was heard by a talent scout, who got him a contract to appear in the BBC Children’s Hour.

Born Ronald Waldron, he became a Broadway star and had his own BBC radio show called The Voice of Variety.

After breaking box office records all over the world he died, aged 91, in 2015.
