Last month, drivers who work for GXO Logistics Drinks voted to go on strike over their salaries. The workers planned to act before the August bank holiday weekend this week, but their reason for doing so has been resolved.

John Wray, owner of The Venue in Bolton, is dealing with the same issue.

He said: “There’s a growing concern we could run out.”

Other pub owners announced the shortages on social media this week.

The Rising Sun in Rochester, Kent, wrote on Facebook: “I just want to make all customers aware that the next few weeks the pub industry has been hit with many issues behind the scenes.”

The Old Black Horse in Mapperley, Nottingham, warned: “Birra Moretti may be substituted with Peroni.

Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association commented on the beer shortages. She said: “The HGV driver shortage is being felt by our sector like so many others.

“Brewers and logistics partners are working around the clock doing all they can to ensure deliveries.”

Workers at GXO Logistics were offered a 1.4 percent pay rise for 2021 for their hard work, but Unite the Union argued this was not sufficient.

This is why employees had planned to go on strike this week.

However, the industrial action will no longer take place because drivers were given a four percent pay rise by the logistics company earlier this week.

Unfortunately, this has not changed the situation facing Britain’s pubs.

James Calder, Chief Executive of the Society of Independent Brewers, has encouraged pub owners to support local breweries and buy regionally-produced beers instead.

He said: “Amid fears of taps running dry, pubs, bars, and restaurants should look beyond mass-produced beers from the Globals and speak to their local independent breweries.”
