The official trailer for the third Spider-Man film No Way Home has been released, giving fans a glimpse of what’s in store – including Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr Strange, the multiverse, and past villains returning.

Star Tom Holland, who has played the superhero in two standalone films and also in Marvel‘s Avengers franchise, posted the trailer on Instagram, saying: “You’ve waited long enough… I told you, you weren’t ready.” Co-star Zendaya, who plays MJ, also shared the clip, announcing: “It’s finally here!!!!!”

The film picks up from 2019’s Far From Home, which co-starred Jake Gyllenhaal as villain Mysterio and ended with Peter Parker’s identity being revealed.

In the latest film, Parker is struggling with his newfound attention and turns to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character Dr Strange (Cumberbatch) for help – and together the pair inadvertently appear to unleash inter-dimensional chaos.

“We tampered with the stability of space-time,” Doctor Strange tells Peter in the trailer. “The multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little.”

Holland is among several actors to have played Spider-Man, including Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire and Shameik Moore (who voiced the character in the Oscar-winning animated film Into The Spider-Verse).

There has been speculation surrounding the upcoming new release that Garfield and Maguire might return for this outing. Unconfirmed reports will no doubt be fuelled by Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus appearing in the trailer, as the character has not been seen since Maguire’s second outing as Spider-Man in 2004.

Jamie Foxx reprises his role as Electro, and there is also further speculation that Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone could return as Mary-Jane and Gwen Stacy.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled for release on 17 December.
