Britons have endured a bitterly cold start to this year. But the cold weather is planning to stick around over the next few weeks. This is because northern regions are bracing for sub-zero temperatures and snow.

Temperatures will plummet to 0C in parts of Scotland on February 13, with 9cm of snow expected to fall.

The following day, an extra 6cm of snow will fall in northern Scotland.

And it will be even chillier at -1C.

Snow maps from Net Weather have shown the majority of Scotland will see a blizzard of snow sweep over on February 14.

Widespread shades of red, yellow and green are also seen swirling over Ireland and towards Scotland from the Atlantic on February 13 too.

The Met Office has forecast wintry showers at the start of February.

Between Monday, 3 to Wednesday 12, the forecaster said on its website: “Northern and eastern areas are likely to start this period cold with a chance of wintry showers, these likely falling as snow to relatively low levels at times.

“Towards the end of next week, the settled weather will spread further east with plenty of sunny spells by day and a risk of frost by night.

“The southeast should hold on to the drier and calmer weather for a while longer with a continued risk of overnight frost and fog.

“Further north, it will turn increasingly unsettled with outbreaks of rain and strong winds at times.

“Temperatures will gradually return towards normal, but will remain a little below average during the settled spell in the south.”

Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind from 3pm today until 9pm on Friday.

Areas affected by the huge gusts include Newcastle, Leeds and Sheffield.

Drivers are being warned that there may be travel chaos on the roads.

This is due to winds affecting vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

There may also be some power cuts in place.
