Today, on Saturday September 25, 2021, Mark Hamill turns 70-years-old. The iconic Star Wars actor has ventured through life with a vibrant acting career, spanning through the aforementioned science-fiction series, as well as playing The Joker in the animated Batman series. Over the years Hamill has been quizzed on whether Luke could have been gay all along, something he believes to be true.
Hamill was asked in 2016 about the sexuality of the Master Jedi, where he confirmed the character “of course” is gay to anyone who wants him to be.
He said: “I just read online that JJ [Abrams] is very much open to [gay characters in Star Wars].
“In the old days, you would get fan mail, but now fans are writing and asking all these questions: ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out.’
“They say to me: ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is!” (Via The Sun from The Guardian)

Hamill went on: “You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
The American star’s comments followed the Star Wars director JJ Abrams speaking out about a similar topic at the time.
The Force Awakens boss explained that it would be “incredibly narrow-minded” to not believe there would be gay characters throughout the Star Wars universe.
He added: “When I talk about inclusivity, it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So, of course.”
Davies went on: “It was happening, I’m a writer, I’ve written those scenes, they were banging away!”
In the Star Wars movies Luke was never given a love interest, while Han eventually had a child with Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Ben Solo (Adam Driver).
A lot of speculation surrounded the potential romantic relationship between Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) throughout the sequel trilogy.
Isaac later spoke out about the possibility of their relationship in The Rise of Skywalker.
Isaac told Variety: “Personally, I kind of hoped and wished that maybe [their relationship] would’ve been taken further in the other films, but I don’t have control.
“It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of… I don’t know what.
“If they would’ve been boyfriends, that would have been fun.”
The Star Wars series is available on Disney Plus now.
