Meghan Markle & Kate Middleton: Symbolism behind Meghan’s £331 wedding gift to Kate

Royal commentator Andrew Morton appeared on This Morning with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby to promote his new book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’ which will be released later this month. In the book, Morton discusses a gift exchange between the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge after Prince Harry and Meghan’s May 2018 wedding. According to Morton, Meghan gifted Kate a gold bracelet as a thank you gift for assisting her during the wedding preparations.

Morton claimed: “After the dust had settled on the wedding, Meghan gave a gold bracelet out to all the people who had helped her, one of whom was Kate.

“So that was a kind of a peace offering and there was, I think.

“Both women are mature and sensible enough to realise that to have duelling Duchess headlines was of no benefit to either of them, and they’re both professional, and they kissed and made up.”

The ‘duelling Duchess’ narrative Morton is referring to was a rumour that Meghan had made Kate Middleton cry in the lead-up to Meghan’s wedding in 2018.

In the lead up to the nuptials, there were reports that Kate was “left sobbing” amid a disagreement with Meghan at a bridesmaids’ dress fitting.

Princess Charlotte was one of the bridesmaids.

However, when Meghan and Harry appeared in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, Meghan refuted that rumour and claimed the reverse was actually true, and that Kate had made her cry.

Months later, the two women seemingly put their disagreement behind them and sat together in the royal box at Wimbledon to watch the 2018 ladies singles final between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber.

Morton’s claim that Meghan gifted Kate a sentimental bracelet is quite a touching story.

In the book, Morton writes: “The spat concerning the bridesmaids’ outfits now behind them, Meghan had since given Kate and her six closest friends gold bracelets designed by Californian jeweller Lisette Polny as a thankyou for their help and support.”

“It was an elegant peace offering, both women professional enough to know that there was no gain in showing dissent or disdain.”

Lisette Polny is an Encinitas jewellery designer.

Meghan presented six of her best friends, including the Duchess of Cambridge a delicate, custom-designed 14-carat gold bracelet as a keepsake.

Called the Kensington bracelet, it was designed by Polny at Meghan’s request.

Polny was a long-time friend of one of Meghan’s best friends, Benita Litt, who sat next to Meghan’s mother during the ceremony.

Litt’s daughters, Remi and Rylan, also Meghan’s goddaughters, were bridesmaids.

Polny also designed two gold necklaces for each of the bridesmaid/flower girls: a simple gold heart and a diamond-studded bow.

In one week after the wedding, Polny had received 490 orders “from all over the world” for the Kensington bracelet, which retailed for £331.94.

However, despite putting a united front in public at Wimbledon, Morton claims there was “little opportunity” for Meghan and Kate to develop a friendship “away from public events”.

He added: “It was a practical matter as much as anything. Kate spent weekends and holidays at Anmer Hall, the Cambridges’ country home in Norfolk, while Meghan and Harry were approximately three hours’ drive away, living in a large, remote, rented property on the Great Tew estate in Oxfordshire.

“Harry’s dream of two united happy families seemed a long way off.”
