Next James Bond: Netflix star smashes past Tom Hardy and Rege-Jean Page | Films | Entertainment

It is well worth remembering that Craig was not a household name, nor was he on many people’s radars when he emerged out of the blue to snatch the biggest role in cinema. The race to replace him as 007 is wide open, although producer Barbara Broccoli has made it clear it will not be a woman. Madden’s profile is currently soaring thanks to his leading role in Marvel’s Eternals – something similar previously happened for him when The Bodyguard was airing. Likewise, Hardy is back at the forefront now that Venom 2 has hit cinemas. But the latest new favourite to be the next Bond currently has no major projects out, which makes his dominance even more impressive.
The current hottest bloke on the Bond block is Umbrella Academy’s Tom Hopper.
The British actor isn’t quite a household name, but he has been regularly on our screens for over a decade. From playing Sir Percival in Merlin to the honourable (so honourable he faced the dragon’s flames rather than kneel to Daenerys) Dickon Tarly in Game of Thrones, he is well-used to playing strapping chaps who always do their duty.
His current role is a little more morally ambiguous in the smash-hit Netflix show The Umbrella Academy where he plays Number One, Luther Hargreaves.
However, it is worth noting that a new study looking at the public’s opinions of who will take over as James Bond, paints a very different picture.
A major new report looked at all the data from social media posts and found a clear winner and it is Netflix’s breakout Bridgerton hunk.
By analysing every tweet written about the 16 actors linked most closely to the job on positive/negative sentiment per tweet, total number of tweets, viral tweets and engagements, OLBG’s Bond Breakdown reveals that Rege-Jean Page is the runaway favourite among fans.
Page is way out in front, followed by Elba and then Poldark’s Aiden Turner and Outlander’s Sam Heughan.
What is interesting is that bookies’ favourites like Hardy and Madden are trailing far behind at number seven and fourteen, respectively. Hopper, as such a newcomer is nowhere to be seen.
However, Ladbrokes confirmed that punters seem to know their own minds and have placed a staggering 34% of all bets this year for the next James Bond on Bridgerton’s Page. Second is Norton on 14% and Hardy on 13%.
In the round-up of the year’s betting, Idris Elba has received 8% of all money spent with Henry Cavill next on 7%.
While punters, pundits and industry analysts endlessly watch the ongoing race for 007, it should also be remembered that Bond supremo Barbara Broccoli is keeping the top-secret James Bond shortlist close to her chest and has also declared recently that she will not even be thinking about Craig’s replacement until next year.
Whether or not anyone is convinced by that, 2022 is suddenly only two months away anyway…
