If you still need to do a big shop to gather all of your food, presents and other goodies for Christmas and New Year, don’t panic. Most supermarkets have prolonged their hours over the next week so you can shop til you drop without having to rush through a crowded store that’s about to close. Express.co.uk reveals the full guide to supermarket Christmas opening hours so you don’t turn up to a closed store.
Aldi
Aldi has extended its Christmas hours this year, so you can shop more often and for longer than usual.
In the run-up to Christmas Eve, the supermarket chain has extended its opening hours from 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday.
Store opening times may vary by location so double-check the signage at your store, use the store locator (https://www.aldi.co.uk/store-finder) to check the times for your local store online, or ring up the store and check.
However, the opening times for most Aldi stores over Christmas will be:
- Saturday, December 18: 8am to 10pm
- Sunday, December 19: 9.30am to 4pm (Scotland stores will be 9am to 8pm)
- Monday, December 20: 7am to 10pm
- Tuesday, December 21: 07:00-22:00
- Wednesday, December 22: 07:00-22:00
- Thursday, December 23: 07:00-22:00
- Christmas Eve: 07:00-18:00
- Christmas Day: Closed
- Boxing Day: Closed
- Monday, December 27: 8am to 8pm
- Tuesday, December 28: 8am to 8pm
- Wednesday, December 29: 8am to 8pm
- Thursday, December 30: 8am to 8pm
- Friday, December 31: 8am to 6pm
- Saturday, January 1: Closed
- Sunday, January 2: 9.30am to 4pm (Scotland stores will be 09.00 to 20.00)
- Monday, January 3: 8am to 8pm (Scotland stores will be open 08.00 to 22.00)
Sainsbury’s also has not released an official opening hour list for all stores and the site advises that you check your local store’s hours using the store locator.
However, most Sainsbury’s stores seem to follow this pattern:
- Friday, December 24: 6am to 7pm
- Christmas Day: Closed
- Boxing Day: Closed
- Monday, December 27: 8am to 8pm
- Tuesday, December 28: 8am to 8pm
- Wednesday, December 29: 7am to 10pm
- Thursday, December 30: 7am to 10pm
- New Year’s Eve: 7am to 7pm
- New Year’s Day: 8am to 8pm
- Sunday, January 2: 11am to 5pm
- Monday, January 3: 8am to 8pm

Iceland’s store opening times are different depending on what store you shop in.
However, it seems that most stores are operating under the following opening hours:
- Monday, December 20: 8am to 7pm
- Tuesday, December 21: 8am to 7pm
- Wednesday, December 22: 8am to 7pm
- Thursday, December 23: 8am to 7pm
- Friday, December 24 – Christmas Eve: 7am to 5pm
- Saturday, December 25 – Christmas Day: CLOSED
- Sunday, December 26 – Boxing Day: CLOSED
- Monday, December 27: 8am to 6pm
- Tuesday, December 28: 8am to 6pm
- Wednesday, December 29: 8am to 6pm
- Thursday, December 30: 8am to 6pm
- Friday, December 31 – New Year’s Eve: 9am to 5pm
- Saturday, January 1, 2022 – New Year’s Day: CLOSED

Lidl
Lidl hasn’t released set opening hours because the hours vary from one store to another.
It looks as if most stores are operating under these hours:
- Friday, December 24: 7am to 6pm
- Christmas Day: Closed
- Boxing Day: 10am to 5pm
- Monday, December 27: 8am to 10pm
- Tuesday, December 28: 8am to 10pm
- Wednesday, December 29: 8am to 10pm
- Thursday, December 30: 8am to 10pm
- New Year’s Eve: 8am to 7pm
- New Year’s Day: Closed
- Sunday, January 2: 8am to 10pm
- Monday, January 3: 8am to 10pm

To find out when your nearest Marks and Spencer is open this Christmas, use their directory.
All Marks and Spencer stores will be closed on Boxing Day and Christmas Day, but opening hours vary from store to store across the nation.
Some stores, particularly larger stores, seem to be open from 6am until Midnight in the leadup to Christmas Eve and then open from 6am until 7pm on Christmas Eve.
On December 27, stores look like they’re open from 9am until 6pm and then this changes to 8am to 9pm until New Years Eve when stores close at 7pm.
The opening hours continue to vary until January 11, so it’s definitely best to check the store locator before heading to the shops.
Morrisons has kindly released a list of Christmas opening hours for stores in England and Wales on their website but advised shoppers to use the store finder (https://my.morrisons.com/storefinder/) to check the exact times for your nearest Morrisons.
The hours are as follows:
- Wednesday, December 22: 6am to midnight
- Thursday, December 23: 6am to midnight
- Friday, December 24: 6am to 6pm
- Saturday, December 25: Closed
- Sunday, December 26: Closed
- Monday, December 27: 7am to 10pm
- Tuesday, December 28: 7am to 10pm
- Wednesday, December 29: 7am to 10pm
- Thursday, December 30: 7am to 10pm
- Friday, December 31: 7am to 6pm
- Saturday, January 1: 9am to 6pm
- Sunday, January 2: 10am to 4pm
Again, Express.co.uk has contacted Tesco to find out the official opening hours for all stores and will update this article if we receive a response.
In the meantime, check the store locator online to find your local store’s opening hours for the festive period.

Waitrose is operating under extended hours over the Christmas period, with stores closing at 11pm in the days leading up to Christmas eve and some Waitrose convenience shops staying open until midnight.
On Christmas Eve, most Waitrose stores will be open from 7am until 6pm.
On Christmas Day and Boxing Day, Waitrose stores will be closed with the exception of those in Welcome Break motorway service stations and Shell forecourts – some of which will be open 24 hours, the site says.
On New Year’s Eve, most Waitrose stores will be open from 8am until 6pm, but then closed on New Year’s Day (except a small number of stores which will have varying opening hours between 7am and 10pm).
