The Duchess of Cambridge is no stranger to a beautiful piece of jewellery. Steven Stone, diamond experts since 1937, identified all the pieces that have been gifted or loaned to the Duchess. Will she be sporting any of them on her 40th birthday?
Steven Stone stated: “Since meeting Prince William back at university and officially joining the Royal Family in 2010, Kate has been lucky enough to be gifted and loaned some of the world’s most incredible pieces of jewellery – whether it’s her birthday, or not!”
She has been gifted or loaned 30 royal jewels thus far, ranging between £600 and £66million.
Overall, the pieces amount to just over £81million, according to Steven Stone.
One of the most notable pieces Kate has is Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring, estimated at £390,000.
It features a 12 carat Ceylon sapphire, originating from Sri Lanka, and is of AAAA quality, making it “amongst the most valuable of its kind”.
Steven Stone observed: “Globally, the sale of blue sapphires increased by around 300 percent at the time, and even now, thanks to Netflix show The Crown, sales of sapphires continue to surge.”
The Duchess inherited five other pieces from late mother-in-law Princess Diana: the Saudi sapphire suite, Lover’s knot tiara, Three strand pearl bracelet, Collingwood earrings and South Sea pearl earrings.
Combined, the six pieces are worth just over £16.5million.
Kate Middleton has also had the honour of wearing jewellery gifted or loaned to her by Queen Elizabeth II, amounting to just over a staggering £61.8million.
These exquisite pieces are the Queen Mary’s diamond choker, Cartier Halo tiara, Nizam of Hyderbad necklace, Maple Leaf brooch, New Zealand Fern brooch, Royal Family Order brooch, Bahrain Pearl earrings, Bahrain pearl choker, Dubai sapphire earrings, and a Ruby and diamond floral bandeau necklace.
The Nizam of Hyderabad necklace, which was loaned to Kate by the Queen, is considered “one of the most precious pieces of jewellery from the British Royal Family”.
Valued at £60million, the “extremely intricate” Cartier necklace was worn by the Duchess for an event at the National Portrait Gallery in February 2014.

Steven Stone stated: “The necklace was a wedding gift to Princess Elizabeth from the Nizam of Hyderabad, who was known at the time as one of the wealthiest people in the world.
“It is believed that the Nizam of Hyderabad requested Cartier allow Queen Elizabeth II to choose anything she fancied from their impressive collection of jewels. The Queen opted for a tiara with three detachable flower brooches and what we now know as the Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace.”
Another piece of jewellery loaned to the Duchess of Cambridge by Queen Elizabeth II was the £1million Cartier Halo Tiara, made up of 739-brilliant cut diamond and 149 baguette diamonds, which she wore on her wedding day.
The nation was wowed by the “dazzling” tiara on April 29 2011, and since “has become one of the most iconic royal wedding tiaras of all time”.
Far less expensive but just as beautiful were some jewels gifted by Prince William to his now wife.

The Prince has given his wife £153,045 worth of jewellery: The Olympic Cartier set, Ballon Bleu Cartier watch, Promise ring, Eternity band, Green tourmaline & amethyst earrings, Shamrock brooch, Personalised gold necklace, Wedding band and Amethyst earrings.
Steven Stone stated: “While Kate Middleton’s engagement ring is no doubt her most iconic piece of jewellery, it wasn’t the first ring she received from Prince William.
“When they were dating back at University, the love-struck Prince gifted Kate with a very meaningful piece of jewellery, that actually reveals a lot about their relationship and their personalities.”
The gold ring with pearls was set on a rose gold Victorian band, featuring two garnets which are Kate’s January birthstone for January, and pearls to represent William’s June birthstone.
For Kate’s 38th birthday, William gifted her with a £495 personalised gold necklace from Daniella Draper, featuring the initials G, C and L for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
The Duchess of Cambridge has also been given a diamond bracelet and yellow and white gold jewellery set from Prince Charles, a gold charm bracelet from Camilla, sapphire and diamond fringed earrings from the Queen Mother and a lotus flower tiara from Princess Margaret.
