This week marked what would have been Elvis Presley‘s 87th birthday some 45 years after the star’s death at just 42-years-old. Fans gathered outside Graceland yesterday for a special proclamation ceremony and cake cutting, as his ex-wife Priscilla Presley gave a heartfelt speech. At first, the 76-year-old admitted her concern no one would show up due to the weather but said she could rely on The King’s devoted followers.
Priscilla said: “I am so surprised by how many people are here. I was a nervous wreck. I was on the plane going, ‘What if nobody shows up? I know how cold it is!’ But I know that Elvis fans will always show up. So thank you, thank you so much.”
Elvis’ wife from 1967-1973 went on to share how The King would prank his fans when he was home at Graceland and they were waiting for a glimpse of him from outside the mansion’s gates.
The 76-year-old enthused: “To see him tease the fans! He’d come out, wave and then pretend he’d go back in the house. And then he’d start to go out the gate again.”
She added that he would then repeat this a couple of times, saying: “He loved to tease them.”
Priscilla continued: “He would be thrilled to see all the fans he still has. Never did he ever think that he would still be popular today. Still, people coming to see him. Opening up the doors to see his home, how he lived, how private he was. And for all of you to keep coming and coming back…I’m still in awe that you’re still here supporting and keeping his legacy alive and that’s not going to stop…and we’re keeping him alive because guess what? He does it, he’s gonna get it and we’re gonna make him get it! Take a little slice [of cake] and wish him many, many, many more years of being alive and being here with us. Thank you.”
But it wasn’t just Elvis who would tease his fans, it turns out his daughter Lisa Marie, who once admitted she was a bit of “terror” as a kid at Graceland, would too.

Lisa Marie would drive around Graceland in a golf cart just like Elvis and the Memphis Mafia.
The King’s daughter would sometimes pull up by the gates and there would be fans asking if they could take a picture of her and the other kids in the inner circle.
Lisa would agree but say that she had to take a picture of the fans first. They agreed, gave her the camera, but then she’d drive off in the golf cart with it.
This story comes from her childhood friends Danny and Joey Smith, the sons of Elvis’ cousin Billy, on their Memphis Mafia Kid YouTube channel. They’ve also shared in the past how Lisa would fill up her golf cart with big green walnuts to chuck at the fans, but luckily nobody was hit.
