To Catch a Thief: ‘Stop with the remakes ffs’ Fans outraged at reboot | Films | Entertainment

To Catch a Thief is widely considered one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest films, originally released in 1955 to critical and commercial acclaim. Paramount has confirmed Gal Gadot will be headlining a remake that is already in early development. Fans rushed to social media to share their outrage, with one writing: “We really need to stop these ridiculous remakes.” Gadot knows controversy, as the star caught flak for her rendition of Imagine, which she recently addressed.

A To Catch a Thief remake was always doomed to controversy, as the original is widely considered one of Hollywood’s best productions. In fact, it was so good that it lured Cary Grant out of retirement following his announcement in 1953.

Gadot will be taking on the role Grace Kelly once held; with the star similarly attached to an upcoming remake of Cleopatra. In a swift assessment of the situation, commentators on Twitter have blasted the news.

@HolmbergRobyn wrote: “Why do they insist on remaking a classic film? Also, why do studios keep putting up the money when the odds of making the money back are pretty low. I would rather watch the original.”

@jennpeters added: “How about a new, great idea, instead of remaking perfect films that we can all watch any time we like??”

@SamFletch214 commented: “Barf. Are they going to cast the Rock in Cary Grant’s part? What a horrible idea.”

@Pr0xy3123 shared: “We really need to stop these ridiculous remakes.”

The remake will be penned by Eileen Jones, the writer behind projects such as Fox’s Prodigal Sons and Fox TV’s reboot of Lethal Weapon. As reported by Variety, the To Catch A Thief remake looks set to appeal to a new generation of filmgoers that are not familiar with Hitchcock’s filmography.

The news of the reboot comes just after Gadot expressed regret following a viral rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine. The video was posted in March 2020, quickly leading to Gadot bearing the brunt of social media mockery.

On Twitter, @SquishySnapple asked: “Why did it take her 2 years to realize this?”

@Syntaximu asserted: “I’m not quite sure if she really understood that the most annoying part was the fact that she was a multi-millionaire pretending to be ‘just like everyone else in this pandemic’.”

Gadot spoke to InStyle, saying: “The pandemic was in Europe and Israel before it came here [to the U.S.] in the same way. I was seeing where everything was headed. But [the video] was premature. It wasn’t the right timing, and it wasn’t the right thing. It was in poor taste. All pure intentions, but sometimes you don’t hit the bulls-eye, right?”

In the video, Gadot was joined by a cabal of stars including Jimmy Fallon, Kristen Wiig, Will Ferrell, Natalie Portman among others. But, despite the flak, Gadot took it in her stride, jokingly performing the song again at the Elle Women in Hollywood event in October 2020.

Gadot joked: “I don’t take myself too seriously.” Explaining: “Might as well, they had a mic here.”

As for the remake, while it hasn’t been taken well by fans, here’s hoping that it is a success and brings something new to the table. Gadot herself has numerous projects in the works, from Wonder Woman 3 to Disney’s Snow White.
