Fantastic Beasts 3 first reactions: ‘Much better than FB2’ with ‘major gay scenes’ | Films | Entertainment

The third film in the Harry Potter spin-off series finally arrives on April 8 in the UK and a week later in the US. As so often in Hollywood (Sunday’s Oscars being a prime example) the work is often overshadowed by the controversies. The Potterverse is currently mired in the dramas over Johnny Depp’s exit and replacement by Mads Mikkelsen, as well as JK Rowling’s comments on trans issues. However, one piece of good news is the praise from preview screenings for increasing LGBTQIA in The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Rowling was previously criticised for announcing that she had always known Albus Dumbledore was gay but not actually showing it on the page. Although she later said: “Their relationship was incredibly intense, it was passionate — and it was a love relationship… I’m less interested in the sexual side — though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship — than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other.”
The Fantastic Beasts saga has already started to show his youthful romance with Gellert Grindelwald and the third film will expand further on their relationship.
Movie Marshall reported: “I just went to an early screening of FantasticBeasts TheSecretsOfDumbledore and it was a lot of fun and a VAST improvement over TheCrimesOfGrindelwald. Highly recommend if you’re a #HarryPotter fan! There’s also a great gay moment in the film as well!”
Film critic Anuj Radia said: “Saw TheSecretsOfDumbledore – new FantasticBeasts film. It was intriguing to see how ‘God-like’ headmaster had his life shortcomings. Interesting parallels with #HarryPotter. Progressive LGBTQIA+ representation in WizardingWorld franchise.”
The films so far have revealed that the Hogwarts headmaster had previously been deeply in love with his arch-enemy while they were schoolboys – so much so that they made a binding vow to never directly harm each other.
They were played by Toby Regbo and Jamie Campbell Bower in brief flashbacks in the previous film but, so far, are not on the main cast listings for the third film.
So far, the reactions have all reinforced the same themes after a disappointing general reception for The Crimes of Grindelwald.
LA critic Eric Goldman said: “If you didn’t like the first one (I did) likely won’t sway you but it’s much better than Crimes, has visually cool magical battles, and actually justifies Fantastic Beasts in the title in fun ways. Some supporting character stories undercooked. I didn’t hate Depp’s take (I worried he would do one of his “wacky” performances but he underplayed it – though with too much going on visually) but I like Mads better. He’s got a great world weary vibe and he and Jude Law have some strong moments together.”

YouTube critic Dave Lee said: “The #SecretsOfDumbledore is an exciting and enjoyable Wizarding World adventure. Thankfully, leagues above the previous, it’s probably the best Fantastic Beasts so far. Great character work, fun adventure, and amazing duels. Fans should really enjoy this one!”
The (non-affiliated) Rowling Library said: “After watching it for the second time tonight, #FantasticBeasts #SecretsOfDumbledore is a very enjoyable film that I am sure I will want to re-watch a few more times. And obsessive Harry Potter fans will find more questions than answers in this movie.”
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is out in UK cinemas on April 8 and in US cinemas on April 15.
