Council tax rebate: Brits urged to ‘check eligibility’ for £150 – only weeks left to claim | Personal Finance | Finance

Britons only have until September 30 to get this financial assistance which was introduced to help families with the cost of living crisis. Recent figures from the Government show that 16.6 million households in England were awarded the council tax rebate in July, which makes up 86 percent of those eligible. Ahead of the cut-off date for the cost of living support at the end of the month, families are being reminded they only have weeks left to claim this extra £150.
To help with the rise in the cost of living, local councils in England are paying £150 to households in council tax bands A to D.
Anyone who wants to enquire about what tax band they are in can check the Government’s online checker.
For those outside these tax bands, the Government has given an extra £144million to households to provide discretionary support for those in need.
The £150 council tax rebate is not a loan and does not need to be repaid to local councils at a later date.

As it stands, all councils in England have started awarding this cost of living support to their constituents.
This will usually be awarded to the bank or building society account that people use to pay their council tax which means it is paid automatically.
However, there is a payment process in place for those who do not pay this levy via direct debit.
Eligible households only have until the end of September to claim this assistance and are being asked to contact their local council if they have not received it.
DON’T MISS
Earlier this month, Greg Clark, the Government’s Levelling Up Secretary, asked Britons to “check their eligibility” for the £150 council tax rebate.
Mr Clark said: “I’m pleased to see further progress in paying the council tax rebate out to the millions of households who are eligible to receive it.
“We want to make sure that those most in need receive the support that they are entitled to help households with the cost of living.
“This is why I am urging everyone to check their eligibility to receive the rebate and contact their councils if they have not.”

How to check your eligibility for the council tax rebate
Households who have not yet received this £150 in support can contact their local council to see if they qualify.
To do this, families can visit their local council’s website to get more information on the scheme or find out contact details.
For those who do not know which authority they are a part of, they can enter their postcode into the Government’s local council checker.
It should be noted that those who are not eligible for the rebate may still be entitled to other Government cost of living assistance.
What other cost of living support is available?
All households are entitled to the Government’s £400 energy bill grant which is being administered to offset the rise in gas and electricity costs.
Furthermore, those on means-tested benefit payments, such as Universal Credit, are also eligible for the £650 cost of living payment.
Similar support initiatives, such as a £300 payment for pensioners and £150 in financial assistance for those with a disability, are also being rolled out.
On top of this, the UK Government has promised to freeze energy bills at £2,500 annually for the next years through its new price guarantee.
