Political drama Cobra and comedy Brassic have been confirmed for more series, Sky has revealed, alongside a host of new and original shows planned for 2020.

The announcement came at the broadcaster’s Up Next showcase event, with stars including Steve Coogan, David Schwimmer, Billie Piper and Maisie Williams speaking about their new shows on stage at the Tate Modern in London.

Some 80 original programmes will air on Sky this year, up by 25% from 2019.

New series include Safe Space, a comedy pilot written by and starring Greg Davies as a demotivated small-time psychotherapist; Redknapps’ Weekend Warm Up (working title)tail, which sees father and son duo Harry and Jamie Redknapp teaming up for their first TV project together alongside comedian Tom Davis; and paramedic comedy Bloods, starring Jane Horrocks and Samson Kayo.

Sky has also announced a 40% increase in acquired US shows, including The Plot Against America (Winona Ryder);The Undoing (Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman); Run (written by Vicky Jones and executive produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge); Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (Natalie Dormer); and the return of the award-winning Succession.

The new announcements add to the Sky original series already due to air this year, including The Third Day (Jude Law, Naomie Harris); I Hate Suzie (Piper); Save Me Too (Lennie James, Suranne Jones, Lesley Manville); Breeders (Martin Freeman, Daisy Haggard); and The Trip to Greece (Coogan, Rob Brydon).

Speaking about the return of Cobra, which has become one of the broadcaster’s most successful dramas in recent years since its launch in January, star Robert Carlyle said: “I’m absolutely delighted by the audience reaction and success of Cobra. I look forward to season two and welcome the chance to play the PM Robert Sutherland once again.”

Brassic, about a group of mates scamming and scraping their way through life in a northern village, has been confirmed for a third series, even before the second has aired.

Joseph Gilgun, co-creator and star, who based the show on some of his own real-life experiences, said it was “very relieving to know your life story isn’t incredibly boring”.

Announcing his new entertainment series, Jamie Redknapp said: “When the opportunity came along to work with two of my favourite people I couldn’t refuse. Big T is one of my favourite comedians and of course my dad knows how to crack a joke too.”

Intelligence, a new comedy set in GCHQ starring Friends star Schwimmer and creator Nick Mohammed, is due to launch later in February, but has already been confirmed for a second outing.

“I am thrilled to continue to pretend to be important to National Security,” said Schwimmer.

Sky has promised that this year will be its best yet for original shows.

Managing director of content Zai Bennett said: “In a world where there are more hours of content than ever, we want to make sure that we’re offering our customers the most high-end, engaging TV that quite simply blows them away.

“We’re creating and investing in our own world-class original content that sits perfectly alongside the best from the US. This year we’ll be making more of our customers’ favourite shows than ever before.”

Other new and returning shows announced include:

• The Tail Of The Curious Mouse (working title), a story about Roald Dahl and Beatrix Potter starring Dawn French
• Emmy-nominated series Urban Myths will return for a fourth outing with stars including Steve Pemberton, Robbie Coltrane, Kara Tointon and Katherine Ryan
• Sweetpea, a new dark comic drama written by BAFTA Breakthrough screenwriter Kirstie Swain and adapted from the novel Sweetpea by CJ Skuse
• You (working title), a new drama written by Ben Chanan (The Missing, Last Kingdom) and based on the novel YOU, by Zoran Drvenkar
