John Lennon was the founding member of The Beatles who cemented his place in the rock ’n’ roll history books with the Liverpool-based band and, later, as a solo artist. His contributions to music and his personal life have both been thoroughly analysed and documented, but how much do you really know about The Beatles icon? Scroll to take the ultimate Lennon quiz.

Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool.

As a teen, he became a bit of a troublemaker at school but was accepted into Liverpool College of Art, where he met his future wife Cynthia Powell.

There, aged 15, he formed a band: The Quarrymen.

The skiffle group would go on to form the basis for The Beatles, which started to come together when Paul McCartney was inducted into the band.

Lennon went solo and moved into more experimental music with his second wife, avant-garde artist Yoko Ono and The Plastic Ono Band.

It was in the years which followed that he released one of his biggest hits, Imagine.

Lennon, who already had young son Julian Lennon with his first wife, welcomed another child with Ono in 1975, Sean Lennon.

He then retreated from making music, entering a period as more of a house husband.

In 1980, Lennon was tragically shot and killed as he returned to his New York home with Ono.

The pair had been out at the recording studio and arrived back at their building late in the evening.

Mark Chapman, an obsessed fan who had met Lennon outside his home earlier that day, fired five shots at The Beatles star, hitting him four times in the back.

Though he was rushed to hospital, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead on December 8, 1980.
