In the early hours of this morning, Queen and Adam Lambert released a charity single in aid of the WHO COVID-19 Solidarity Fund. Brian May, Roger Taylor and Adam Lambert recorded a new version of Freddie Mercury’s We Are The Champions remotely between London and Los Angeles. And during an interview on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show this morning, the Queen drummer revealed his surprise.
Asked how the lockdown was going, Taylor said: “I was doing the little drum things and Brian was doing some little guitar things [on Instagram].
“And he suggested we record a version of We Are The Champions.
“So we did that using iPhones…and then we sent it to Adam, who’s my next-door neighbour in LA actually…and he sang on it.
“You Are The Champions took off and we’re dedicating it to the frontline workers.”

Taylor, admitting his surprise, said: “I never thought we’d make a record on mobile phones and in three different sections, but there we are!”
On how You Are You Champions came about, Lambert said: “We kinda threw around the idea, ‘why don’t we try doing ‘You’?’
“It felt right singing both, we have one chorus of the original lyrics and the second chorus is this new take on it.
“Obviously it’s this huge iconic song and it took this crazy crisis that we’re in to warrant us chaining this lyric.”
He added: “Their bravery and sacrifice must not be prejudiced by anything less than a one hundred per cent effort by our governments to protect them.
“They are precious to us all and they are truly our champions.”
While Lambert said: “It is with the deepest gratitude to all those on the frontline all over the world that we dedicate our performance. Thank you for keeping us safe, we are in awe of your bravery and strength.”
And Brian May commented: “It seems to me we should dedicate this one to all the front-line soldiers fighting for Humanity against the insurgent coronavirus.”
May added: “Just like our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents who fought for us in two world wars, those brave warriors in the front line are our new CHAMPIONS.
“That means the doctors, nurses, cleaners, porters, drivers, tea-ladies and gentlemen, and all who are quietly risking their lives daily to save the lives of our kin. CHAMPIONS ALL!!!”
Queen and Adam Lambert’s You Are The Champions is available from today across all streaming and download services.
Royalties from the charity single go towards the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organisation.
