The BBC political editor described how the referendum changed the course of British history in an interview in 2016, after the UK voted to leave the EU. But after her comments were unearthed by Express.co.uk, readers were furious, claiming it showed the broadcaster’s bias towards Remain.  Four years ago Ms Kuenssberg told Press Gazette that “no one knows” what the consequences of the Leave vote would be – least of all the politicians.

She exposed the stance after collecting an award for best reporter for her coverage of the referendum.

Although Ms Kuenssberg admitted the vote “didn’t surprise” her, she did claim that her job within journalism had changed as a result.

The former ITN reporter said: “Clearly our decision to leave the EU is the biggest political decision we will take as a country for decades.

“No one knows what the consequences will be, good or ill, and therefore I think most people would accept that the consequences of that are bigger than any choice from the general election – although those are of course huge stories too – and you’ve seen politicians grapple with that and they don’t really know what to do.

“We are also in an era where the pundit class has been proved wrong so many times that it’s ok to be a political journalist and say ‘I don’t know’.”

However, the comments did not go down well with readers from Express.co.uk, who criticised her intervention.

One wrote: “Not interested in Kuenssberg or what the PRO EU BBC have to say on anything.

“They tried to stitch this country up during Brexit and held us back nearly four years with their pro EU propaganda channels.”

She vehemently denies this, claiming she would “die for impartiality at the BBC”.

Nevertheless, in the same year, Ms Kuenssberg was accused of bias against Labour and Jeremy Corbyn, which saw a petition launched calling for her dismissal.

However, the petition was later withdrawn by website 38 degrees due to concerns that it had become a “focal point for sexist and hateful abuse made towards Laura Kuenssberg”.
