The Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) has confirmed a lorry and a car have caught fire in an incident on the M6 just south of Stafford. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident took place on the M6 northbound between junctions 12 and 13.

Images taken from the scene shows firefighters attempting to put out the blaze from the lorry and car which are positioned on the far lane of the motorway.

The pictures reveal the fire has caused extensive damage to the front cab and trailer of the lorry with smoke bellowing across the motorway.

Four fire crews from Cannock, Penkridge, Rugeley and Cheadle are currently at the scene.

At this stage there are no reports of any injuries.

Motorists are advised to use an alternative route as delays will be lengthy.

A spokesman for the CMPG said: “We are currently dealing with a car and HGV fire on the M6 between junction 12 and 13 at Stafford.

“Please find an alternative route, possibly A449 through Penkridge, northbound delays will be lengthy.

“Thankfully no injuries, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Highways England are working hard to get the carriageway moving, if you are stuck in the tailbacks we thank you for your patience.”

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service wrote on Twitter: “Fire Service dealing with an incident on M6 North between junctions 12 and 13.

“Vehicles have been on fire following an RTC, but no reports of any injures.

“Motorway is closed in both directions.

“Crews from Cannock, Penkridge, Rugeley and Cheadle in attendance.”

More to follow. This is a breaking news story
