Sophie, Countess of Wessex, 55, joined the Royal Family when she married Prince Edward, 56, in June 1999. Prince Edward may be the son of the Queen, but it is Sophie who will often attract attention during public engagements. How has this changed their relationship?
In this role, Sophie has represented the Queen at many solo engagements.
Over the last year, it is thought by some that Sophie has stepped up to take on extra duties as roles within the Royal Family changed.
While she is spotted out more often than her husband, this has only improved their relationship, according to body language expert Judi James.
Analysing recent pictures of the couple for Express.co.uk, Judi claimed they have become increasingly happy in their relationship.

She said: “Both Edward and Sophie appeared to have matured into very different roles from their idealised wedding poses and this evolution seems to have worked well, meaning they look happier, more relaxed and perhaps even more in love than they did back then.
“Edward’s non-verbal signals suggests he’s happily moved into a more low-key role in public, while Sophie’s confidence signals show her as being the more socially active one in the team dynamic.”
When Sophie and Prince Edward have attended events together, Judi explained they both seem pleased with Sophie’s growing importance.
She added: “Sophie appears to enjoy stepping into the royal limelight but we never see any signs of vanity from her.”
Even though they have been married for 21-years, Sophie and Prince Edward have shown their affection for each other has not changed.
“One of the most telling traits as a couple though appears to be the way they appear engaged and amused by one another during conversations,” the expert commented.
“Not many long-married couples use this amount of eye contact when they’re out socialising and it suggests the pair really do enjoy one another’s company.”
Prince Edward seems to appreciate Sophie’s growing role in the Royal Family, according to the expert.
“Compare Edward’s congruent smiles and laughter to the performed ones on his wedding day,” Judi explained.
“It does seem to suggest increased delight in Sophie’s company.
“They seem to make one another laugh and Sophie’s eye-connect as she chats and smiles suggests the admiration and love might be mutual.”
