Video footage shows sirens wailing as residents were warned to get to higher ground. The Alaska Earthquake Centre stated that reports have been coming in from the Alaskan and Kenai peninsulas up to Anchorage regarding the natural disaster.

The Alaska Earthquake centre tweeted: “We are working on a preliminary M7.8 w/ a tsunami warning 75 miles S of Chignik, Alaska.

“Felt reports are coming in from the Alaskan & Kenai peninsulas up to Anchorage.”

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Centre has so far issued several warnings following the earthquake in Alaska.

The earthquake reportedly had a depth of six miles and was centered 60 miles south-southeast of Perryville, Alaska.

NWS Bay Arena tweeted:  “An earthquake occurred in Alaska. Impacts to the California coast are still being evaluated by the Tsunami Warning Centre.”

NWS PTWC confirmed that there was no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The Pacific Warning Centre said: “The magnitude for the #Alaska #earthquake has been upgraded to 7.8, and the alert area now includes #tsunami advisories for southern Alaska and the Aleutian Is.

“No #tsunami threat to #Hawaii from 7.8 magnitude earthquake in #Alaska.”

A local high school on Kodiak Island provided shelter for evacuees accoridng to AP news.

The superintendent of the Kodiak School District, Larry LeDoux, told the Daily News: “We’ve got a high school full of people,”

“I’ve been passing out masks since the first siren sounded.” 

He added: “Everything’s as calm as can be. We’ve got probably 300, 400 people all wearing masks,”
