The illuminating figures reveal Buckingham Palace requires a huge amount of energy to run. With the palace’s 775 rooms, tens of thousands of light bulbs and swimming pools, the Queen’s annual energy bill is roughly £1,127,942.

The figure is based on research by energy price comparison website Uswitch.

It is thought the palace’s roughly 40,000 light bulbs alone cost around £28,000 each year to power.

Among the 775 rooms in the building, there are 240 bedrooms for staff, guests and royals, along with 92 offices and 78 bathrooms.

Work has been done in the past to help bring down the cost of maintaining the palace, however.

In 2016, the government announced it would begin renovation on Buckingham Palace at a cost of around £369 million.

This renovation work, expected to take around 10 years, includes improving the energy efficiency of the London landmark.

The government said the renovation work will “significantly” improve the palace’s efficiency by more than 40 percent.

It claimed this will save 554 tons of carbon emissions each year.

A Uswitch spokesman told the Daily Mail: “All the celebrity homes are dwarfed by Buckingham Palace, which is estimated to cost £1.1 million a year in energy bills – including £28,000 for 40,000 lights.

“Swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and even recording studios and pubs add thousands to the electricity bills of celebrity homes.”

However, Her Majesty does have a significant amount of funding, putting the energy bill into perspective.

The ‘Privy Purse’, income from assets such as land and property that the Queen can spend on whatever she likes, was worth around £16 million in 2015.

Buckingham Palace’s eye-watering energy bills are far ahead of the celebrity with the next-highest power costs.

Sir Elton John’s Windsor home, with its eight bedrooms, swimming pool, and cinema rooms, costs more than £49,000 each year in energy alone.

This is around 43 times more than most households in the UK.

Energy market regulator Ofgem has said the average ‘duel fuel’ energy bill in the UK is around £1,254 a year.

Other celebrity electricity bills included in the Uswitch research include one for chef Jamie Oliver, whose Essex home runs a bill of around £32,875.

Singer Robbie Williams’ Holland Park home is slightly pricier at over £33,133.
And David and Victoria Beckham’s Cotswolds abode, with nine bedrooms and a steam room, costs around £11,395.

Uswitch energy expert Sarah Broomfield said: “If you’ve ever opened your energy bill and had a shock then spare a thought for poor Sir Elton.

“Thankfully, most of these celebrities don’t have to worry about paying the bills, but celebrity or not, there’s always a benefit to keeping down the amount of energy you use.”
