Cheapest UK supermarket – Aldi, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s costs ranked

Supermarkets have been open throughout the pandemic, working hard to ensure their customers and staff stay safe while grocery shopping. The likes of Aldi, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s offer shoppers a wide range of food and household items but which retailer is the cheapest?
For those wanting to get more for their money, Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket according to The Grocer.
The analysis shows that the Big Four supermarkets, are on average, £10.21 more expensive than Aldi on a basket of 33 everyday grocery items.
Aldi had the lowest prices on 31 of the 33 products in the research, which included everyday essentials like milk, bread, eggs and apples.
The Grocer found that shoppers spend £11.63 more by shopping at Tesco than they would at Aldi.

Of course though, supermarket giant Tesco does stock more branded products compared to discount retailer Aldi.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “We know this Christmas is likely to be difficult for many families and so we are incredibly proud to consistently provide our customers with the best value groceries in the UK.
“We’re delighted that Aldi has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket in not one but two independent price surveys.
“It is possible to make savings without compromising on quality; this is why millions of Brits continue to choose Aldi to do their weekly shop, and it’s why we’ll ensure we keep providing the best quality products at the best possible prices.”

Consumer group Which? also found Aldi to be the cheapest supermarket.
On the news, Aldi CEO Giles Hurley said: “Clearly, Christmas can be an expensive time of year, but we continue to do everything we can to keep our prices low and make Christmas affordable for everyone.
“We are delighted that today, two independent organisations have confirmed that Aldi remains the lowest‑priced supermarket in the UK.
“Analysis by consumer group Which? has revealed that a typical basket of groceries at Aldi is between 11 percent and 22 percent cheaper than the same shop at the Big Four supermarkets.
“The latest independent price survey by The Grocer also shows that on their basket of 33 items you could save between £7.98 and £12.31.”
Aldi is now the fifth largest supermarket with 900 stores and more than 36,000 employees.
The news comes as Aldi today launches a new campaign to help support those in need this Christmas, pledging £1 to the Neighbourly Foundation for every one of its fresh whole turkeys and fresh turkey crowns purchased in the run-up to the big day.
The supermarket expects to raise more than £400,000 to help fight food poverty with this initiative, as part of its mission to support the Neighbourly Foundation in helping to look after the health and happiness of communities across the UK.
Aldi CEO Giles Hurley also recently updated customers on how to shhop safely when in-store.
The letter read: “With just four weeks to go until Christmas, I am delighted to share that our stores are fully stocked with our best ever festive range of award‑winning food and drinks at the unbeatable prices you’ve come to expect from Aldi.
“Everything you need to know about shopping with Aldi this Christmas can be found online at aldi.co.uk/christmas, including store opening hours and the dates when our amazing fresh seasonal products are available.”
The retailer is also extending its Christmas hours to help ensure shoppers have everything they need for the big day.
A statement on the Aldi website reads: “Good news everyone. In the run-up to Christmas Eve, we’ve extended our shopping hours from 7am-11pm Monday to Friday, just to make that whole Christmas shop a little easier for you.
“Of course, don’t forget you can check out all your local Aldi opening times online before you plan your visit.”
