Out of all of Elvis Presley’s movies, he no doubt remembered the 1965 hit Viva Las Vegas the most fondly. During the shoot he met his co-star and on-screen lover, Ann-Margret. The young Swedish-American actor was an extremely big name at the time, as she had just appeared in the hit 1964 movie Bye Bye Birdie.
During their time together, Elvis and Ann-Margret engaged in a passionate love affair, which saw them falling head-over-heels in love with one another.
Throughout the film’s shooting and beyond, the duo spent all their time together, even though Elvis had already been betrothed to his future wife, Priscilla Beaulieu, who resided in Elvis’ home, Graceland.
Long after the pair had ended their relationship, Ann-Margret spoke about her time with Elvis in her autobiography, My Story.
During these passages she explained how she and the Jailhouse Rock singer were meant to be together, as they were so similar.

Speaking in her book, Ann-Margret wrote: “We were indeed soul mates, shy on the outside, but unbridled within.”
She added that the pair were extremely similar within their negative tendencies.
The star said: “We both lived on the edge and we both were self-destructive in our own ways.
“In many ways, both of us, despite fame and whatever else we’d achieved so quickly, had remained very childlike, and emotionally dependent.”
The story goes that this answer was misconstrued, and was published claiming Ann-Margret said she and Elvis were to be engaged.
This information eventually got back to Priscilla, starting an enormous argument between the couple, and eventually leading to the split of Elvis and Ann-Margret.
Just a few months later, Elvis got engaged to Priscilla, and the pair married a year later, in 1967.
Despite their marriage, the King later visited Ann-Margret at one of her Las Vegas shows that same year.
Although the pair were eager to catch up, Elvis couldn’t help but fall to his knees and confess his love to Ann-Margret once again, behind closed doors.
Speaking about the event in her autobiography, Ann-Margret wrote: “Suddenly the old connection burned as brightly and strong as it had years earlier. His smile faded, and his eyes lost their playfulness and turned serious.”
She added: “Elvis then stepped forward and dropped to one knee.” Elvis then took her hands, and told her “exactly how he still felt about [her]”.
Ann-Margret claimed she “intuitively knew that he still had feelings for her”.
