Queen pairs Australian wattle brooch with yellow ensemble for first appearance of 2021

Queen Elizabeth II has made a number of virtual appearances this year, but today was the first time that Her Majesty was seen publicly in 2021. The last time the Queen was seen outside was in December, when she met some of her family in the grounds at Windsor Castle.
Today, Queen Elizabeth attended a service at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Air Forces memorial at Runnymede to mark the centenary of the Royal Australian Air Force.
The Queen opened the memorial at in her coronation year, 1953.
It is a site to remember 20,000 Commonwealth airmen and women who died in operations in Europe but have no known grave.
The Queen was seen in a number of videos posted on Twitter commemorating the airmen and women who were killed while serving their country, and speaking to current members of the Air Force.

For the ceremony, the Queen wore a very fitting brooch, called the Australian wattle brooch, which was given to her in the capital of Australia, Canberra, in 1954.
This was the Queen’s first visit to Australia, as well as the first trip to the country by a British reigning monarch.
The diamond brooch was given to the Queen by Australian Prime Minister at the time, Robert Menzies, on behalf of the Government and People of Australia at a State Banquet.
The brooch features three flowers, encrusted in white diamonds, and leaves sprouting out of the flowers, which are made of yellow diamonds.

According to the Royal Collection Trust, the flowers are in fact tea tree blossoms and the brooch is in the shape of a wattle, which is a tree native to southeastern Australia.
Its scientific name is the acacia pycnantha, while its common name is the golden wattle.
The wattle is also the national floral emblem of Australia and features on its Coat of Arms, along with the kangaroo and the emu.
Queen Elizabeth wore the wattle brooch on the left lapel of her long, yellow-green coat.
Her Majesty often wears bright colours and today was no exception.
She matched her coat with a pale yellow hat with flowers at its front, black loafers with thin gold buckles, and a black handbag.
The Queen has worn the brooch with a yellow outfit before, most notably for the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey in 2017.
On that year’s Commonwealth Day, Her Majesty wore a canary yellow wool coat with silver buttons, and again matched her coat with a yellow hat.
Earlier photos of the Queen show her wearing the wattle brooch with a yellow coat in May 1960 too, for her annual visit to the Chelsea Flower Show.
In April 2005, she wore the brooch for the wedding of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, pairing it with a very light yellow and cream knitted coat.
Her Majesty also opted for the wattle brooch in December 2017, wearing it this time with a bright orange coat for a church service in Sandringham on Christmas Day.
She matched the coat with a hat in the exact same orange hue.
As well as yellow and orange, the Queen has also previously worn the brooch with white, lime green, and turquoise ensembles.
