Speaking to Channel 4 news last night Dr David Nabarro, Special Envoy on Covid-19 for the World Health Organisation demanded a global response programme be set up “immediately” to share vaccines with struggling nations. Dr Nabarro stressed how what is happening in India could happen elsewhere in the coming months. Appearing alongside Dr Nabarro was Dr Jayalal, national president of the Indian Medical Association, whose country is currently undergoing a massive wave of covid infections and deaths with oxygen shortages and concerns over a new triple mutant variant. He also called for help from other nations to tackle the covid outbreak.

The WHO medic was asked by Channel 4 news anchor Jackie Long what can countries such as Britain, who are far ahead in their jabs programme, do to help less fortunate countries in their covid response.

Dr Nabarro replied: “The world needs a global covid response programme set up immediately by world leaders that recognises this is not just a problem for individual countries, this is a problem for all countries.”

He warned: “What’s happening in India could well be happening in other countries in the next few months.”

And in a passionate outcry the WHO Dr demanded: “We’ve got to have a total global response which means fair sharing of vaccines!”

He continued by saying: “We are a world, we are humanity, we should be approaching this problem as humanity.

“No country should be trying to fully vaccinate its adult population when we have situations of massive high death rates in other parts of the world – we should be sharing.”

Dr Nabarro concluded by saying: “Remember a lot of the vaccine being used in Britain was actually sourced from India so of course we should be sharing.”

Dr Jayalal agreed that a global effort to help countries such as India is crucial and went on to call for more “raw material” to “enhance” the infrastructure on the manufacturing of the vaccines to be sent to India to help tackle covid and get more of the country jabbed.

Earlier Dr Rajeev Ranjan of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi told LBC that oxygen shortages in India are causing “havoc” and that a new “triple mutant variant” called the West Bengal variant has appeared in the last few days. 

He said: “No-one thought that Covid-19 would resurge in such a dramatic way and in such a bad way creating havoc all around.

“But as you can see every day the cases are increasing and adding more than 50,000 a day.”

He added how “last time the need for oxygen was around 20% but this time it has increased to around 50%” adding there is a “scarcity” of oxygen in India which has to provide for over 1.3 billion citizens as it tackles three new variants.
