The 2017 documentary, ‘The Diana story’, on Amazon Prime uncovered many facts about the Princess of Wales’ life and death including the passing of a recognisable jewellery item. Prince Harry inherited his mother’s £300,000 sapphire ring after her death, Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, revealed.
But Prince Harry donated the ring to his brother, Prince William, before his engagement to Kate Middleton in 2010, in honour and memory of their late mother.
Mr Burrell said on the documentary: “Harry said to him: ‘Wouldn’t it be fitting if she had mummy’s ring?’.”
He added: “Then one day that ring will be sat on the throne of England.
“Harry gave up his precious treasure.”
As the story goes, Mr Burrell was wrapping up Diana’s household as his final duties as her former butler when he told the young princes that they could have any items they wanted.
According to the former butler, the 14-year-old Prince William opted for Diana’s Cartier watch that she had received on her 21st birthday.
When he asked Prince Harry what he wanted, the young Duke of Sussex reportedly said: “I remember when I held mummy’s hand when I was a small boy and that ring always hurt me because it was so big.”
The former royal butler then proceeded to give Harry Diana’s engagement ring.

The Duchess of Sussex’ engagement ring included two diamonds from Diana’s personal collection.
Meghan said at the time: “Everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of Princess Diana’s stones and obviously not being able to meet his mum.
“It’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us.”
