Avengers actor Mark Ruffalo has apologised for suggesting Israel is “committing genocide” during its conflict with Hamas.

Ruffalo, 53, who plays the Incredible Hulk in the Marvel films said that comments he had tweeted were wrong, and had been used to justify antisemitism.

The actor and producer wrote on Twitter: “I have reflected & wanted to apologize for posts during the recent Israel/Hamas fighting that suggested Israel is committing ‘genocide’.

“It’s not accurate, it’s inflammatory, disrespectful & is being used to justify antisemitism here & abroad. Now is the time to avoid hyperbole.”

The star has 7.5 million followers on the platform, and has written posts about the conflict a number of times.

He has previously called for sanctions on Israel, using the hashtag #GazaUnderAttack, saying: “Over 30 children killed. Mothers dead. Hundreds injured. We are on the brink of a full-scale war.

“Sanctions on South Africa helped free its Black people – it’s time for sanctions on Israel to free Palestinians. Join the call.”

Ruffalo is not the only celebrity to speak out over the violence, with stars such as Bella Hadid, Rihanna and Gal Gadot using their platforms.

Israel has fired hundreds of air strikes against targets in Gaza, while Hamas has returned more than 4,000 rockets towards Israel, with more than 250 killed in total.

Egyptian meditators are currently overseeing a ceasefire in the region between Israel and Hamas, with the UK government pledging a £3.2 million aid package for civilians under attack in the region.
